I didn't print the reference for the following text, but it makes sense. "If the orifice is not too close to the bottom, sides, or water surface of the approach channel, the water particles approach the orifice along uniformly converging streamlines from all directions." I don't think you have uniformly converging streamlines from all directions the way you proposed the inlet.
